<p>People are always asking me what each style of yoga is like and what type of yoga they should do. I will admit I have my preferences, but the questions made me realize that one of the ways I want to share yoga is to help everyone make a decision that is right for them. I want to encourage people to truly be aware of their bodies and make a conscious choice about what they need &#8212; a yoga prescription, if you will.</p>
<p>That being said, I needed to go out and do a little bit of research. The first practice I wanted to explore is Bikram Yoga. Not to be confused with power yoga, Bikram is a copyrighted series of 26 poses developed by Bikram Choudhury that includes two pranayama (breathing) practices. The 90 minute class typically takes place in a carpeted room with mirrors, and the room is heated to 105°F with about 40% humidity.</p>
<p>To expand my knowledge of Bikram, I scampered out to a studio to get my feet wet&#8230; or my face&#8230; or my chest&#8230; or how about everything? I was soaked! Here are a few tips and thoughts from my experience:</p>
<p><strong>BREATHE:</strong> I know I keep saying this, but in a hot class it’s crucial to breathe. It’s the quickest way to check in on yourself and see how you are doing. It’s best to breathe through the nose. Not only does it help keep your attention and lengthen out your breath, but the nose is designed to filter air and catch toxins before they go into your body, as well as cooling the air down as it goes in.</p>
<p><strong>BE AWARE:</strong> Not beware, but BE aware. Because it’s yoga and that’s what the practice is about, no matter what style.</p>
<p><strong>HYDRATION:</strong> It&#8217;s key in this practice. Since the heat of the room is so high you need to make sure you&#8217;re not getting dehydrated. Instead of drinking a ton during class &#8212; which they only allow at certain breaks during the practice &#8212; try to hydrate before you go to class. If you practice in the morning, hydrate the evening before. If you practice in the evening or afternoon, finish drinking water at least an hour before class. Don’t drink coffee prior to class &#8212; I made that mistake! And don’t forget to drink water after class. Coconut water is a great way to rehydrate while replenishing potassium and electrolytes.</p>
<p><strong>DON’T EAT BEFORE CLASS:</strong> With any physical activity, it’s important to practice on an empty stomach. Bikram is no exception.</p>
<p><strong>REST:</strong> Even with years of practice under my belt, I was made very aware of this early on in the class. It’s not that the practice is impossible, but as humans with egos we have a tendency to push ourselves too hard and not pay attention to our bodies. All yoga practices are about AWARENESS, so take time to do what you need to care for yourself and rest when you need to.</p>
<p><strong>DRESS FOR HEAT:</strong> If you go to a Bikram class in long, thick pants, you will probably be sorry. Wear breathable, lightweight clothing.</p>
<p><strong>BE READY TO SWEAT: </strong>You will sweat a lot, so bring a mat, water bottle, and a towel. The grippy towels are really great, but a beach towel works too. Since there is no flow in this style, there is no tripping on the fabric. Sweat is a huge part of the practice. You do need to be ok with sweating. One of the amazing women I work with told me a story about her Bikram teacher encouraging her to let the sweat roll right into her ear (or wherever). At first it was a struggle, then she realized that she actually liked to conquer her desire to wipe the sweat away. It was empowering to let it flow all over her body. I find this SO inspiring to let your body be. Your hair will not be perfect, your shirt will be wrinkly and drenched and there will be sweat on your elbows, but you will be way more present and focused if you don’t let that rule your practice.</p>
<p><strong>THINGS I LIKE:</strong> Bikram is an amazing way to detox. There is this sense of WOW I just made it through that and I’m still alive! In some ways it shows you a strength and endurance you never knew you had. You learn a lot about determination and concentration. To be in a hot class working hard is more of a mental thing than physical one. Anytime we bring the mental awareness back into our practice, I like it. The trick is to keep the ego in check so we don’t push too hard. No matter what the practice is like physically, the key in yoga is to not look at the asana (physical posture) as the goal. It’s just a tool to help you integrate more into yourself and into your life. Looking just like the teacher won’t help you have a better practice.</p>
<p><strong>OTHER THOUGHTS:</strong> Since it is so hot, it’s really easy to push too hard. Don’t &#8212; you can seriously injure yourself. Not unlike any physical practice.</p>
<p>People are either hot or cold for Bikram. They love it or hate it. Bikram is not for everyone, but don’t dismiss all yoga if you don’t like it &#8212; just try another kind. 			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Nowadays many people assess various types of Reiki methods and ask if their own style is “old” style or imperfect. It seems to be especially true for people who have not performed any self-training for a while and think about getting back into Reiki, but ask if it will work as it did before or even if it will be ok for them to perform this still. Are they still able to channel Reiki to get healing energy after a long rest?</p>
<p>It is true! When you have been switched into Reiki wave of energy, you have it forever. I believe that constant self-practice is a really useful thing. Besides, if you are devoted to work on your healing and spiritual growth, you can channel a wider ranges of Reiki energy. </p>

<p>Yoga breathing exercises involves inhaling through the nose. This is the safest way to breathe because of the mucous membranes and hairs inside that filter oxygen inhaled. Any harmful particle is prevented from getting inside the lungs and inflicting damage to the body. There are practitioners that believe the life force is taken in when air goes inside the nose.</p>
<p>Breathing in yoga poses involves three types and these are higher breathing, middle breathing and lower breathing. The upper part of the lungs is used with higher breathing. The shoulders are elevated so that the chest is puffed out. One should not do this kind of inhalation because the upper parts of the lungs are the tiniest and they bring minimal amount of oxygen.</p>
<p>The middle parts of the lungs are utilized when one does middle breathing therefore it should also be avoided. The best type is lower breathing as it uses the lower parts of the lungs. These are the largest portions of the lungs and they take in the most amount of oxygen. This is done when the shoulders are not raised as one inhales and the tummy is pushed out with every breath. Every day, lower breathing should be used according to yoga practitioners.</p>
<p>Yoga has proven to give many benefits to a person. One becomes physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually developed when it is regularly done. In order to enroll in such classes, one can go to the local gym and ask if they offer them. If not, one can look for TV shows showcasing them. There are also books and magazines that show how yoga is done. <p> Lang and Mary Hadley have just returned from an eye-opening trip to Africa.</p>
<p> The two, both experienced travelers and experienced volunteers, flew to Ethiopia in October as part of a Rotary International trip. They also spent time in Uganda.</p>
<p> The Hadleys were there to help Rotary International meet its goal of wiping out polio throughout the world. Their work included administering polio vaccine.</p>
<p> Lang was blunt about their role in the worldwide effort to immunize. &ldquo;(We) Rotarians aren&rsquo;t there to really be effective in putting the drops into the kids&rsquo; mouths,&rdquo; he said. &ldquo;In reality, we&rsquo;re a hindrance.&rdquo;</p>
<p> That work is best performed by the local people &mdash; &ldquo;those who look like them and live more like them,&rdquo; he said.</p>
<p> Not that they were unwelcome, Mary noted, saying foreigners make a big splash. &ldquo;They&rsquo;d say to us, &lsquo;You have no idea how much this means to us.&rsquo;&rdquo; She described one young woman who told her, &ldquo;The fact that you&rsquo;re here, holding our hand, gives us so much hope.&rdquo;</p>
<p> Both said the primary purpose of their visit &mdash; and the reason Rotary supports such visits &mdash; is to provide a first-hand look at the magnitude of the problem. &ldquo;It has more impact when you see kids with polio living in mud huts and in abject poverty,&rdquo; Lang said.</p>
<p> &ldquo;It was just an amazing experience,&rdquo; Mary said. &ldquo;We were mobbed by children everywhere we went.&rdquo;</p>
<p> They also had a private meeting with the president of Ethiopia, who clearly recognized the benefits that Rotary brings to his people.</p>
<p> After their time in Ethiopia, they flew to Entebbe, in Uganda, then drove eight hours to the city of Gulu where they spent their time repairing houses and putting in wells. They also helped install a first-ever water system in a birthing hut and gave the rural midwife a pair of scissors for cutting umbilical cords. &ldquo;She didn&rsquo;t have one before,&rdquo; Mary said.</p>
<p> They also helped rebuild the mud hut of a woman, an AIDS victim, who lives with her six children, some of whom also have AIDS.</p>
<p> That area of the country has endured incredible hardships, Mary explained, and was terrorized for years by the Lord&rsquo;s Resistance Army, which is perhaps most notorious for its children soldiers.</p>
<p>Work is under way now to re-integrate the &ldquo;child soldiers and sex slaves and to get the orphans out of refugee camps back into society,&rdquo; Mary said.Who does what
<p> The trips are arranged and coordinated by three Washingtonians: Ezra Teshome, Ben Omara Abe and former Washington Secretary of State Ralph Munro. Teshome and Abe are both from East Africa; in the U.S., both have become successful businessmen. Teshome recently was named 2010 World Citizen Award winner by the World Affairs Council in Seattle and previously was named by TIME magazine as one of 10 Global Health Heroes.</p>
<p> The two use their good names to open doors to more good work.</p>
<p> The activities on the ground in Africa are all organized by Rotarians and Rotoractors in the communities, the Hadleys said.</p>
<p> This isn&rsquo;t the first international excursion for the couple to provide assistance to the impoverished, They&rsquo;ve also volunteered in the Philippines and have &ldquo;various and sundry projects under way&rdquo; in Central America, Lang said. The latter includes working with three Mayan villages in remote Guatemala. Together the Hadleys are gathering the funding necessary to provide clean water, composting toilets and nutrition training to the people there. They&rsquo;ve also brought them non-hybridized seed &ldquo;so they can have something to sell,&rdquo; Lang said.</p>
<p> At every step of the way the Sequim Rotary (Noon) Club has pitched in, providing both logistical and financial support.</p>
<p> Mary had a message for anyone wanting to help. &ldquo;Support the Rotary clubs &mdash; all are doing good work,&rdquo; she said. She noted the Sequim Sunrise Rotary Club supports ShelterBox, which provides emergency housing around the world.</p>
<p> &ldquo;Everybody thinks it&rsquo;s just a businessmen&rsquo;s club, but all around the world you see the schools, hospitals &mdash; all sorts of places with the Rotary name,&rdquo; Mary said.</p>
<p> She said the Noon Rotary Club has contributed about $2,500 to their efforts, but by the time the &ldquo;multiplier effect of Rotary&rdquo; kicked in, &ldquo;we had $53,000.&rdquo;</p>
<p>Lang noted that all of the donated funds go directly to the projects. &ldquo;There is no overhead at all,&rdquo; he said.
<p> He explained that the funds are put into a pool and invested, with the investment income used to pay the administrative expenses.</p>
<p> They also noted that Rotary provides funding for local organizations as well, including purchasing books for the schools and providing assistance to the Boys &amp; Girls Clubs.</p>
<p> The Hadleys were longtime members of Rotary on Bainbridge Island, where they lived before retiring to Sequim.</p>

<p> Kate Beckinsale, whose new movie Contraband hits cinemas next month, talks about living in Hollywood and how her strict workout regime helps her stay in shape for her action-packed roles. </p>
<p>Hollywood actresses are required to strut their stuff to promote their movies, and surely few do it better than Kate Beckinsale. Posing and showing off her enviable figure, scantily clad in a billowing blue shirt, a pair of gleaming white pants and pink stilettos, she says: &ldquo;It&#8217;s been about two years since I&#8217;ve posed in my knickers like this &mdash; now I&#8217;m at it all the time,&rdquo; as she prances around obligingly on what, from the ground, appears like a precarious platform set on a rooftop, high over Sunset Boulevard. </p>
<p>At 38, the daughter of the late actor Richard Beckinsale looks every inch a Hollywood bombshell &mdash; all big hair and golden skin. </p>
<p>But for the last two years, not much has been seen of her. A film she worked on in 2009 with Matt Dillon and Vera Farmiga went straight to DVD, and a Hollywood writers&#8217; strike meant there were few projects around. </p>
<p>&ldquo;I didn&#8217;t plan on a sabbatical, there just wasn&#8217;t anything I was dying to do and I have to really make a decision &mdash; is it worth me being away from my kid?&rdquo; she explains. </p>
<p>She has a daughter, Lily, from her eight-year relationship with Welsh actor Michael Sheen, who is famous for playing prime minister Tony Blair in the film, The Queen. </p>
<p>&ldquo;She&#8217;s 13 now, so I&#8217;ve only got a few more years with her before she goes off to college. These years are important,&rdquo; Beckinsale says. </p>
<p>She split with Sheen in 2003 when she met American film director Len Wiseman (39) on the set of the first Underworld film. The couple married in 2004. </p>
<p>As well as a turning point in her personal life, it marked a new direction in her professional one too, as she became known for her action-packed roles. </p>
<p>Last year she made three movies back-to-back, the action thriller Contraband, opening in cinemas on March 16, where she plays the wife of an ex-criminal played by Mark Wahlberg, then the fourth Underworld film, reprising her role as uber-slinky vampire Selene and finally Total Recall opposite Colin Farrell. </p>
<p>It&#8217;s all been rather a surprising development for the academic Beckinsale, who studied languages and literature at Oxford University and early in her career made her name in a variety of serious dramas such as a film of Cold Comfort Farm, in theatre in The Seagull, and ITV&#8217;s Emma. While we meet she impressively also manages to multi-task by simultaneously giving an interview to new magazine Women&#8217;s Health (womenshealthmag.co.uk). </p>
<p>&ldquo;It&#8217;s not really in my nature to do all this ass-kicking,&rdquo; she confesses with a smile, revealing that she suffers a lot of bumps and bruises while filming the physically demanding roles. </p>
<p>&ldquo;When I first started training for Underworld they were like, &lsquo;She can&#8217;t even run!&#8217; And I couldn&#8217;t!&rdquo; </p>
<p>But her disciplined professionalism regarding her career has been replicated in her approach to her fitness, even though she described it initially as &ldquo;a challenge&rdquo;. </p>
<p>&ldquo;It&#8217;s not a mystery. I just have to get on with it,&rdquo; she says. </p>
<p>Beckinsale has a strict diet, which includes lean protein meals every three hours, and works out with routines and yoga daily at her home in Los Angeles. </p>
<p>&ldquo;I have a personal instructor who comes round and we work out in the kitchen near the dog bowl,&rdquo; she says. </p>
<p>&ldquo;If I&#8217;m away, or she is, we do it on Skype. I really like that you have a bit of a lie-down at the end, that keeps me going!&rdquo; </p>
<p>She insists that her glowing good looks aren&#8217;t down to any artificial help, saying she&#8217;s never had any &ldquo;work done&rdquo; &mdash; not even on her teeth. </p>
<p>&ldquo;You&#8217;re welcome to look for scars,&rdquo; she says, leaning forward obligingly. </p>
<p>&ldquo;I haven&#8217;t even done Botox. Look, I can move my face. But according to popular opinion, I&#8217;ve had everything on my face replaced. </p>
<p>&ldquo;I read somewhere I had my chin replaced. I wouldn&#8217;t know the first place to get a chin!&rdquo; </p>
<p>&ldquo;Maybe I&#8217;ll start getting everything replaced when I&#8217;m 50 &mdash; start at the ankles and work up.&rdquo; </p>
<p>Working with her husband, who directed her in the first two Underworlds and in Total Recall, has strengthened their relationship rather than tested it, she says. </p>
<p>&ldquo;Being separated for five or six months [working away on set] I think is worse,&rdquo; she says. </p>
<p>And she reveals her husband is relaxed about the fact that sometimes for her roles she has to get intimate with other actors, as happened with Colin Farrell on Total Recall. </p>
<p>&ldquo;I&#8217;ve done it before on Underworld and Len was all right with it,&rdquo; she says. </p>
<p>She adds jokingly, &ldquo;I think it was worse for Colin. It&#8217;s awkward if you have to fondle the director&#8217;s wife. Especially with Len saying, &lsquo;All right, that&#8217;s it, you&#8217;re fired&#8217;.&rdquo; </p>
